Rant and Rave

I didn't want one of my first posts to be a rant and a rave post, but here goes...
Today while shopping at one of my favorite stores (JoAnns Fabrics) I was asked yet again where my children came from. To which I told her they were from here (where we live). She then proceeded to tell me that her son adopted from Ethiopia. I told her that was wonderful. I don't have anything against international adoption. A child in need is a child in need, no matter the location.
She immediately went into a list of excuses as to why they chose an international adoption as opposed to a domestic adoption. I have to share them with you...

They realized it would be quicker to do an international adoption as opposed to a domestic adoption (F.Y.I. not always true) As a matter of fact each child that we have adopted has not taken longer than 18months, and all of ours came from Foster Care.
They were made aware that children here in our own country are all ill. A.K.A.  special needs.. To which she asked me (in front of my children) what there issues are. I'm sorry, REALLY? Trust me, I was quick to tell her that her sons perfectly healthy child may have attachment issues or even PTSD.  Trying to be a good example for my kiddos, I did this in the nicest way possible. I hope she didn't notice the vein pulsating on my forehead.
Then she told me that her son doesn't have time for special needs children. If you ask me, that's perfect because he does not deserve a special needs child.
There may have been a few more excuses she hurled at me but at that point all I heard was blah, blah, blah.
I cant begin to tell you how annoyed I was by this complete stranger. I felt attacked. I don't understand why she felt the need to even have a conversation with me. I feel bad for people that are so quick to attack. They must live a pretty miserable life.

  1. When people hear I adopted they ask that question too. How rude of her to say some of those things. And all children are different regardless of special needs. I personally think my kiddo makes me learn new things because of his differences. I'm much better with children in general because of the things I'm learning while parenting him.

  2. yikes. you have to wonder what's going on in her life to make her act like this to you and those sweet kids ...
